The Crucifixion

1502
Woodcut, 405 x 292 mm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The expressive Crucifixes in Berlin and in New York form an impressive beginning to Cranach's extensive graphic output. The large sheets adopt the folio format introduced by Dürer in his Apocalypse cycle, and are also inspired stylistically by these models.
