The Passion Pulpit

1460-65
Marble and bronze, 137 x 280 cm
San Lorenzo, Florence

The southern pulpit, known as Passion Pulpit, contains depictions of the Flagellation, St John the Evangelist, Christ in Gethsemane, Christ before Caiaphas and Pilate, as well as the Crucifixion, Deposition of Christ and Burial of Christ. The reliefs on the pulpit are extraordinary in their expressionistic, occasionally violent, portrayal of these events.

This view shows the scenes of Burial of Christ, Flagellation, St John the Evangelist, and Christ in Gethsemane.
