Allegory of Dawn

1544
Oil on canvas, 89 x 155 cm
Gemäldegalerie, Dresden

Battista, younger brother and long-time assistant of Dosso Dossi, was likewise court painter to Alfonso, duke of Ferrara, and to his successor, Ercole II. The present work was painted as one of four allegories of the Time of the Day, originally placed above each of the windows in an apartment of Duke Ercole in the Palazzo del Corte. The companion pieces Dusk and Night are also in Dresden, the fourth piece, the Day is lost.
