DUCCIO di Buoninsegna

Peter First Denying Jesus (scene 9)

1308-11
Tempera on wood, 50 x 54 cm
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Siena

The picture shows one of the 26 narrative scenes from the Stories of the Passion on the reverse side of the Maestà. It is situated in the bottom row on the right side of the main section below the scene of Jesus before Annas.

The way St Peter's feet are depicted confirms Duccio's fondness for experiment, which grew from his desire to depict what he saw realistically. Instead of showing the feet - as is generally the case - from above or from the side, Duccio paints the soles of the feet pointing upwards. Projecting parts, such as the ball of the feet or the heels, are accentuated by firelight.
