DÜRER, Albrecht
(b. 1471, Nürnberg, d. 1528, Nürnberg)

Battle of the Sea Gods

1494
Pen drawing, 289 x 381 mm
Graphische Sammlung Albertina, Vienna

Through his friendship with the Nuremberg humanist Willibald Pirckheimer, Dürer had been introduced in Rome in 1494 to the wonders of the ancient world, and his knowledge of Italian art was spurred on by the prints of Mantegna, Pollaiuolo, and others which he avidly copied. The present pen drawing is a copy of Mantegna's print.
