DÜRER, Albrecht
(b. 1471, Nürnberg, d. 1528, Nürnberg)

The Small Triumphal Car or the Burgundian Marriage

c. 1518
Woodcut
British Museum, London

This cut is from the triumphal procession of Emperor Maximilian. The question as to which of the 137 woodcuts may be attributed to Dürer, is answered by pointing to these two cuts displayed here. The greater part of the work was by Burgkmair. In subject matter the triumphal procession is related to the Triumphal Arch, through which the Emperor with his family on the car was to pass. Originals in miniature by Kölderer served as guide.

This picture represents Maximilian as Duke and Mary of Burgundy holding the Burgundian coat of arms.
