Portrait of Emperor Maximilianc. 1518
British Museum, London
Dürer made a sketch from life of the Emperor on June 18th, 1518, at Augsburg. The drawing, which is in the Albertina, Vienna, was the original for the woodcut. In the first rare edition the letters "ae" in the word Caesar are separate and enclosed in the C. In a second edition, in which the portrait was transferred to another block (copy), a and e are separated from C and on later prints is Dürer's monogram; a third edition, a later block (copy) has ae joined together in Caesar; a fourth edition, a later block (copy) has ornamental framework by Hans Weiditz and Dürer's monogram.
