DÜRER, Albrecht
(b. 1471, Nürnberg, d. 1528, Nürnberg)

Flagellation (No. 6)

1512
Engraving, 118 x 74 mm
University Art Museum, Princeton

Sheet No. 6 of the Engraved Passion.

Dürer himself is seen standing in the doorway. The masterly drawing of Christ's body, the predominant profile and its quivering movement are notable. The device of cutting off the column suggests the true expanse of the chamber. The bearded guard appears also in Christ Crowned with Thorns. The rendering is superior to that of the same subject in the Small Woodcut Passion.
