EVERDINGEN, Caesar van
(b. 1617, Alkmaar, d. 1678, Alkmaar)

Allegory of the Birth of Frederik Hendrik

c. 1650
Oil on canvas, 373 x 243 cm
Huis ten Bosch, The Hague

Van Everdingen's paintings are characterized by compositions full of commotion, in which the figures are crowded together close to the picture plane. This approach means that the effect of depth is very limited. Cool, clear colours, lit by blue and red accents, are also characteristic of Van Everdingen's work, and he was a master in rendering different materials. His work represent a high point in Dutch Classicism.
