The Beheading of John the Baptist1648-50
Oil on canvas, 149 x 121 cm
This painting is an early work by Carel Fabritius. It is one of the most appealing religious pictures of the 1640s to come out of Rembrandt's circles, and a great example of Rembrandt's legacy as a teacher of dramatic staging and the study of naturalistic effects.
