FRANCESCO DAL PRATO
(b. 1512, Caravaggio, d. 1562, Firenze)

Medal of Alessandro de' Medici

1534
Bronze, cast, diameter 4 cm
British Museum, London

Duke Alessandro de' Medici's image on this medal relates to Pontormo's portrait drawing in the Biblioteca Marucelliana, Florence, indicating that the artist probably provided the medalist with the likeness. Giorgio Vasari used the same profile in his large-scale portrait of the duke painted in the same year.

On the reverse of the medal, the figure of Peace holds a cornucopia and an olive branch and sets fire to a stack of arms.
