The Penitent Mary Magdalen1620-25
Oil on canvas, 146 x 109 cm
Galleria Palatina (Palazzo Pitti), Florence
The Magdalen appears on her own often in the seventeenth century, as a figure of penitence for her earlier sinful life. Although she still wears a costly dress, she is barefoot and disheveled.
