The representations of this subject appears in the Italian painting in the 13th-14th centuries. The present panel can be dated to c. 1370; it was painted under the influence of the Florentine Cione brothers. It was the right wing of a diptych, the left wing probably depicted the Virgin.

The surface of the panel is damaged, the original colour of the background was blue. The authorship of the painting is not certain.
