The layout of the Belvedere garden in Vienna was established in response to the specific contours of the landscape and the position of the two palaces for the victorious Field marshal Prince Eugene. Between the imposing structure of the Upper Belvedere and the more intimately scaled Lower Belvedere lay a splendid park. In 1717, Prince Eugene obtained the services of the royal Bavarian architect Dominique Girard, who had previously worked at Nymphenburg and Schleissheim.
