Schloss Augustusburg, Brühl

Schloss Augustusburg at Brühl was the favourite residence of the archbishop of Cologne and Prince Elector Clemens August of Bavaria. Dominique Girard, a French landscape architect active in Germany, took over the garden layout in 1728 and based his work on the canal system at Nymphenburg. A magnificent park was created, surrounded by water and dominated by a basin laid on the central axis in imitation of Versailles. Diagonal pathways connected the main parterre with the woodland.
