Drawings (Etten, The Hague, Nuenen, 1880-85)
by Vincent van GOGH

Drawings had been van Gogh's way of embarking on the artistic life: before taking lessons in painting from Anton Mauve in The Hague in 1881, he made only drawings. His drawings from later periods could serve several functions. One group consists of sketches for paintings. Another group contains large-format works that were created parallel to his paintings. In some cases van Gogh dealt with the same subject when he did it in paintings and drawings at the same time. Finally, there are drawings that originated as copies of paintings.

For all their sketchy quality, van Gogh's drawings are works of art in their own right, even when they exist as preparatory treatments for a painting.
