The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine

1503-08
Pen and brown ink, 227 x 172 mm
Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen

This drawing is the earliest surviving work by Gossart, dated before artist's trip to Rome in 1508-09. In the chimney-piecelike construction in the background Moses, identified by the Tablets of Law, is represented. This depiction in the scenes from the life of the Virgin originates from Dürer's set of twenty woodcuts of the Life of the Virgin, in which Moses serves as the Old Testament prefiguration of Christ.
