The School of Tagaste (detail)1464-65
Apsidal chapel, Sant'Agostino, San Gimignano
In places Benozzo added genre details to his depiction of the life of St Augustine: on the right side, in a simultaneous scene in front of a columned loggia, the teacher is punishing a small pupil by delivering birch strokes to his bare backside. The laziness of other pupils is contrasted with the quickness to learn of the little Augustine, who is walking at the teacher's side and eagerly studying a small slate with Greek letters. The other pupils who are present at the scene appear to be taking no notice of it.
