De Grebber was not only a pioneer of formalistic innovations and stylistic advances among the Haarlem Classicists, but also an original contributor to Christian iconography. In this painting he offers an unprecedented interpretation of the time-honoured theme and concept of the Trinity. Christ kneels before God the Father and the shining dove of the Holy Spirit. Wearing a papal tiara and ecclesiastical vestments, the Almighty sits enthroned in the clouds and gestures to his son, directing him to sit on a second throne decorated with winged and gilt cherubim to his right.
