GUILLAUME, Jean-Baptiste-Claude-Eugène
(b. 1822, Montbard, d. 1905, Roma)

Cenotaph of the Gracchi

Bronze, 85 x 90 x 60 cm
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Jean-Baptiste-Claude-Eugène Guillaume was a student at the Académie de France in Rome. His Cenotaph of the Gracchi, submitted in plaster in 1847, was based on a type of funerary monument common under the Roman Republic and in the early years of the Empire. Throughout the time he spent in Rome he remained faithful to the inspiration of antiquity.
