Boy with a Lute

c. 1625
Oil on canvas, 72 x 59 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The subject of this painting was described in a nineteenth-century auction catalogue as "a youth in a merry pose who lets the last drop from a glass fall on his fingernail." The last drop indicates that the glass is empty and it should be refilled.

The same subject is found in an engraving by the Haarlem printmaker Theodoor Matham, made after an unnamed artist, possibly Gerrit van Honthorst.
