HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger
(b. 1497, Augsburg, d. 1543, London)

Edward, Prince of Wales

1543
Oil on wood, diameter 32 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The inscription on the background shows the age (6) of the sitter, the son of Henry VIII. Some scholars assume, based on X-ray investigations revealing a garment corresponding to the fashion in 1546, that the painting was executed by an imitator (William Scrots) in 1546. However, it is generally accepted as the last work of Hans Holbein.
