LARGILLIÈRE, Nicolas de
(b. 1656, Paris, d. 1746, Paris)

Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Rousseau

1710
Oil on canvas, 90 x 73 cm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Jean-Baptiste Rousseau (1671-1741) was a French dramatist and poet who enjoyed great popularity in the witty and decadent Parisian society of his day. The nonchalant realism of this portrait is a style that Largillière helped develop.
