LEMOYNE, Jean-Baptiste II
(b. 1704, Paris, d. 1778, Paris)

Mademoiselle Dangeville as Thalia

1771
Marble, height 72 cm
Comédie-Française, Paris

Jean-Baptist II Lemoyne, one of the most prolific portraitists of the age, both at court and in town, modelled a series of exact likenesses of Louis XV at every age, but he also sculpted the frank witty features of Medemoiselle Dangeville, a well-known actress at the Comédie-Française. She is depicted as Thalia, the muse of comedy.
