Portrait of the Young Louis XIII

c. 1615
Painted enamel on copper with foil, green canvas, 8 x 6 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

An ensemble of these small portraits has been preserved. They portrayed the new king, sometimes with a pendant of his young wife, Anne of Austria. They appeared on sundry luxury items, such as mirrors and enamelled salt cellars. This one in fact adorns the back of a toilette mirror.
