LONGHI, Alessandro
(b. 1733, Venezia, d. 1813, Venezia)

Painting and Merit

c. 1761
Oil on canvas, 130 x 94 cm
Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice

This was the 'pièce de réception' presented by Alessandro to the Accademia. On the spine of the book held by the male figure we can read the artist's signature: ALESSANDRO / LONGHI/ PINX. The title of this personified allegory has been deduced from the one given on the engraving of the same subject, based on the work seen here, dedicated to John Udny, British Consul in Venice in 1761.
