LORENZO Monaco
(b. ca. 1370, Siena (?), d. ca. 1425, Firenze)

Madonna of Humility

1420-22
Tempera on panel, 116 x 64 cm
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Lorenzo Monaco's many repetitions on the subject of Madonna of Humility are essentially variations on a theme, whether intended as the centre panel of a larger structure, or more commonly as a fully independent object. Differences between these pictures are frequently a matter of little more than their relative size or the specific pose of the Madonna or the Christ Child. The Brooklyn Madonna of Humility is the last in a series of three surviving images based on a single design.
