LUINI, Bernardino
(b. 1480, Luino, d. 1532, Milano)

Virgin and Child with Saints and Donors

c. 1507
Oil on canvas transferred from wood, 78 x 126 cm
Museo Civico, Padua

This work - probably privately commissioned, to judge by the two kneeling and praying figures in the foreground - belongs to the period when Luini first came into contact with the cultural life in Milan, and at the same time represents the moment when his style was most strongly influenced by the art of Veneto.

The saints represented in the painting are Peter, Catherine, Lucy, and Paul.
