The Sala dei Gigli in the Palazzo Vecchio was decorated in 1480-82 by Domenico Ghirlandaio, assisted by his brothers Benedetto and Davide. The portal in the west wall was executed earlier during the renovations under the brothers Giuliano and Benedetto da Maiano. Atop the entablature of the portal a statue of John the Baptist was placed, the inlaid door panels portray Dante and Petrarch.
