Cornelis Massys, one of Quentin's two sons, was an unremarkable figure painter but developed into an outstanding observer of nature. In this respect, his art ranks with that of Joachim Patenier and Pieter Bruegel. In his Crucifixion, the tragedy of the event is expressed in the rocky landscape of Calvary and the threatening sky hanging over it.
