Madonna of the Cherries1520s
Oil on panel, 76 x 63 cm
The Madonna of the Cherries dates to the 1520s, Massys last decade. It was a period during which he was concentrating on devotional images, mainly of the Virgin, many of which are known in multiple versions, rather than altarpieces.
13 versions of the composition are known, but only two, one in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, and the present panel are accepted as by Massys himself.
