MASTER of the Borgo Crucifix
(active 1250-1270)

Virgin and Child

Egg tempera on wood, 32 x 23 cm
National Gallery, London

This panel and another in the same museum depicting the Man of Sorrows came from a single diptych. They were reunited in 1999. The diptych was presumably commissioned for private devotion, probably for a member of the Franciscan Order.
