Mythological Allegory

c. 1580
Oil on canvas, 130 x 96 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

Venus is the focus of this anonymous composition representing the allegory of Water or Love, which pictures her emerging from a pond in which the Three Graces dance. She chases away satyrs and putti trying to steal the arms of Cupid, shown asleep amid flowering underbrush.
