MASTER of the Palazzo Venezia Madonna
(active around 1350 in Siena)

St Peter

c. 1350
Egg tempera on wood, 60 x 35 cm
National Gallery, London

St Peter carries a book and his traditional attribute of the keys to the kingdom of Heaven.

The two panels in the National Gallery depicting Sts Mary Magdalene and Peter were in the main tier of the altarpiece which had in its centre the Palazzo Venezia Madonna. A panel with St Paul (private collection) was also identified as a main tier panel of this altarpiece. The original location of this altarpiece is not known, although Siena and its territory is a possibility.
