Virgin and Child with Two Angels

1260s
Egg tempera on wood, 37 x 27 cm
National Gallery, London

This panel is the left wing of a diptych. The right wing depicting the Crucifixion is in the Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest. Both panels have the same cross resembling the emblem of Pisa, painted on the reverse.

The diptych is one of the earliest devotional panels in which the Crucifixion is not a narrative but invites theological contemplation.
