Crucifixion

1260s
Egg tempera on wood, 36 x 26 cm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

This panel is the right wing of a diptych. The left wing depicting the Virgin and Child with Two Angels is in the National Gallery, London. Both panels have the same cross resembling the emblem of Pisa, painted on the reverse.

The diptych is one of the earliest devotional panels in which the Crucifixion is not a narrative but invites theological contemplation.
