Painted crucifixes, painted and cut out in the shape of the cross ("croce dipinta"), were among the earliest and most characteristic genres of Italian panel painting. These representations were widespread in Italy from the twelfth century to the beginning of the fifteenth century. The figure of Christ is depicted in a way similar to that of Giotto's Crucifix in the Santa Maria Novella in Florence. |
