Crucifix

1301-50
Tempera on wood
Museo dell'Istituto Ellenico, Venice

This is one of the most monumental of the 14th-century crucifixes, even though its lower lobe is damaged. The way in which the Virgin and St John hold their hands to their cheeks to signify sorrow is typically Byzantine.
