The anonymous painter, active in Naples in the early seventeenth century and referred to as the Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds, produced an expressive, naturalistic style close to the Caravaggism of Jusepe de Ribera, a Spanish painter who settled in Naples in 1616, from whom derives the inspiration for the Mocking of Christ.
