The Fountain of Grace

c. 1450
Oil on panel, 181 x 116 cm
Museo del Prado, Madrid

In this Flemish allegory, Christ, the source of grace, sits enthroned in the centre under a Gothic canopy flanked by the Virgin and St John. Musical angels play in a Paradise Garden, while in the foreground the Water of Life nourishes the hierarchy of the church on the left, while opposite them the Jews, led by Synagogue (his staff broken) reject Christ's saving Grace.
