Ivory, height 53 cm
Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid

This crucifix, given to San Isidoro de Leon Cathedral by Ferdinand I of Leon and Castile, marks the first known appearance of the theme of Christ on the Cross in Spanish art. The decoration on the cross itself and the frieze of intertwined animals and foliage around the edges recall Cordovan or Mozarabic ivories, while in the body of Christ, Ottonian and Italian types mingle. Characteristics of a truly Spanish style can already be felt through this Byzantinism. Black onyx inlay indicating the dilated pupils accentuates the intense expression of this lifelike Christ.
