Misericord (detail)

12th century
Wood
Cathedral Museum, Zamora

Surprisingly, we can encounter a vast amount of bizarre, grotesque and often apparently subversive imagery at the margins of devotional manuscripts, the capitals of churches and cloisters and the undersides of choir stalls. The present image shows part of a misericord on which a man with exposed backside followed by a bear is carved. (A misericord is a small wooden shelf on the underside of a folding seat in a church, installed to provide a degree of comfort for a person who has to stand during long periods of prayer.)
