The figure of Christ was central to every aspect of medieval life and thought, and no single image could encompass all the meanings that he embodied. Christ was both human and divine. Even as a child he could be seen either as a vulnerable and appealing infant or as a celestial prince (such as in the present statue representing him in royal robes).
