University, Salamanca

The Plataresque style, so called because of its resemblance to goldsmith work (plateria), is characterized by an exuberant decoration of Italian Renaissance inspiration covering a medieval structure. The façade of Salamanca University is the masterpiece of this style. Built by several anonymous artists, it was completed in 1533. In style, some of the reliefs suggest Lombard-Venetian influence; others appear to be influenced by the French school of the Loire.
