Hôtel de Lamoignon, Paris

The Hôtel d'Angoulême, later the Hôtel de Lamoignon, was built by Diane de France, illegitimate daughter of Henry II. It is attributed in the old guide-books to Baptiste du Cerceau, the eldest son of Jacques, but has also been attributed to Louis Métezeau, who was on Diane de France's payroll as an architect. In style this house seems to derive rather from Bullant than the elder du Cerceau, particularly in the use of the colossal Order of pilasters and the breaking of the entablature by the dormers. It has been restored by the City of Paris and is now the best preserved late sixteenth-century house in Paris.
