During the last ten years Michelangelo mainly drew plans for new buildings and perhaps for further sculpture. He planned for Pope Pius IV (1559-1565) new gates for the city of Rome, of which only the Porta Pia was, in fact, built.

This study was part of the project for the renovation of the surrounding area, organized by the Pope.
