In 1544 Montelupo executed the colossal marble statue of the Archangel Michael for the top of Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome, to replace one lost during the Sack of Rome; it in turn was replaced in 1753 by a bronze statue of the same subject by Flemish sculptor Peter Anton von Verschaffelt (1710-1793). Montelupo's version may still be seen in an open court in the interior of Castel'Sant'Angelo.
