NICCOLÒ DI SER SOZZO
(d. 1363, Siena)

Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist

1340s
Tempera and gold on panel, 28 x 18 cm
Private collection

Niccolò di Ser Sozzo likely trained in Pietro Lorenzetti's workshop. This composition, like many by the artist, bears the influence of this master. Characteristic of Niccolo's style is his bold treatment of drapery and the distinctive physiognomy of his figures with their deep-set features.

This small panel probably was intended for private devotion. It was designed to stand alone.
