OSTADE, Isaack van
(b. 1621, Haarlem, d. 1649, Haarlem)

Winter Landscape

1643
Oil on canvas, 106 x 146 cm
Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem

The present painting belongs to a sizable group of winter landscapes which Van Ostade produced in the last ten years of his life. During this period, he seems to have been the market leader of winterscapes. His winter scenes are brimming with an abundance of lively details, but are integrated in a coherently structured landscape that perfectly evokes the murky atmosphere.

The painting is on loan to the Frans Halsmuseum from The Kremer Collection.
