Madonna of the Poppy

c. 1325
Panel, 98 x 184 cm
San Pantalon, Venice

The painting was commissioned for the original church of San Pantalon, which was refurbished at the end of the seventeenth century. The poppy alludes to the Passion of Christ. His mother seems to be pushing it away from her son, who is leaning forward to grasp it.
